Berck took on a therapeutic vocation under the Second Empire. It all began with the initiative of a sailor's widow: Marie Anne Brillard, known as Marianne-toute-seule, had the idea of giving sea baths to the sick children entrusted to her care. The local doctor noted the improvement in their health and reported on the incredible density of iodine concentrated in Berck. Today, Marianne-toute-seule is considered the inventor of thalassotherapy.
